2018 THEME
The students continued to explore the research and practice of Environmental Science and Public Health by focusing on Richmond, California. Richmond is a diverse community on the north eastern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area. Richmond is a place with many public health challenges and opportunities for innovation and improvement. The students examined the air quality issues, neighborhood equality, and health challenges to deepen their understanding of how pubic health research and practice is in the real-world. They looked at air quality from the traditional to the innovative methods of measurement and evaluated neighborhoods for positive and negative community aspects. The students had the opportunity to try their hand at collecting field data for health, social and environmental information. The goal of the 2018 program was to help the students pose a hypothesis and then write a scientific
paper to answer it.
